Master Mariners

Master Mariners is a competition which is held at the Pelican Point Scout Hall. It is a competition which tests the knowledge and skills of crews. Traditionally held on the first weekend of May, Master Mariners has been running now for over 50 years.

Sponsored by and named after the Company of Master Mariners (an organization of foreign going Ships Captains, living in Perth ), the Master Mariners run and judge the competition scoring teams out of 100 for Rowing, Sailing, Knots and Splices and Seamanship and Chart-work.

Each year the rivalry between scout groups increases but in any competition, only one team can win. 1st Fremantle Sea Scout Group have been entering teams of Scouts, Venturers and recently Rovers into the competition since its conception in the 1950s. 1st Fremantle have had success in winning the Master Mariners shield on numerous occasions.

The activity is the highlight of the Sea Scouting calendar on the Swan River. It is a chance to learn new skills and gives scouts a taste of the responsibilities involved in boating and promotes practical and proper Seamanship.
